BD/BG/BK (1995-1999)
From SubiWiki
Welcome to the BD/BG/BK section of SubiWiki! This section will try to inform you of all the little quirks to the 1995-1999 Subaru Legacies. Here you will find information on pretty much everything you would ever want to know about the 1995-1999 BD/BG/BK Legacies, from Technical advice, to Modifications, everything is here for you! If you didnt already know about the chassis codes for the 1995-1999 Subaru Legacies, I'll give you a quick overview. When owners refer to their car as a BD, a BG, or a BK, they are talking about 3 different chassis codes, BD refers to the Legacy Sedan, BG refers to the "high-roofed" Wagon (the Outback Wagon, however most wagon owners refer to their wagons as BG's), and BK refers to the Legacy Wagon. I hope that you find the following information helpful and please add to it, as this is a Wiki...

What exactly is a BD/BG/BK Legacy...
Engine
The engines found in the BD/BG/BK Legacies are all different variations on Subaru’s 4-cylinder Boxer engine. The engine found in the standard “L” model is a 2.2 Liter, 137 hp variation, and the one found in the “GT” version is a 2.5 Liter, 165 hp version. The Outback models were also offered with both engine choices. JDM Legacy's often came equipped with the 1.8L or 2.0L engines. Brightons came with 2.2L's, the 250T had the 2.5L and Lancaster 6's came with Subaru's 3.0L 6-cylinder Boxer engine. Lastly the Legacy GT's came with a 2.0L sequential twin turbo making 276 hp at the fly wheel
Driveline
The two drivelines available for the BD/BG/BK Legacies were the 4-speed automatic transmission and the 5-speed manual transmission. The 1995 Legacies were offered in front-wheel drive and the 1996-1999 Legacies were offered with All-Wheel Drive only.
Exterior
The 1995-1999 Legacy's were offered in a few different exterior trim packages, they are as follows;
Legacy L (Sedan and Wagon)
Legacy LS (Sedan and Wagon)
Legacy LSi (Sedan and Wagon)
Legacy Brighton (Wagon)
Legacy GT (Sedan and Wagon)
Legacy GT Limited (Sedan and Wagon)
Legacy Outback (Wagon)
Legacy Outback SUS (Sedan)
As an interesting tid bit, the Legacy Outback SUS (Sports Utility Sedan) was initially offered only in New England in 1998 with a limited run to test the waters, upon its success, it was then offered to the rest of North America.

Warranty Issues
One of the most common issues with the BD Legacy is the head gaskets in the 2.5L engine found in the GT models. One of the most common signs of this problem is antifreeze in the oil and, obviously, the disappearance of the Antifreeze from the overflow tank located to the right of the radiator.
